How to Vectorize a Flyer or Poster for Large Format

The situation is familiar: a flyer was designed at A5, it worked, and now somebody wants it as a pull-up banner. Enlarged, every edge softens and the type — which is the thing people actually read — goes fuzzy at exactly the distance they are standing.
Vectorizing the graphic elements fixes that. But a poster is a mixed document, and the important judgement is which parts to convert and which to leave alone.
Convert the graphics, keep the photographs
Flat elements — logos, headline treatments, rules, panels, icons, background shapes — are exactly what vectorization is good at, and they are also what shows enlargement worst, because a soft edge on a flat colour is obvious in a way that a soft edge inside a photograph is not.
Photographs are the opposite. A vectorized photograph is a stylised interpretation with visible colour banding, and at large sizes it looks like a deliberate poster-art effect whether or not you wanted one. Leave photographic areas as high-resolution raster and place them back into the vector document.
The result is a mixed file, and that is correct. Nearly every professionally produced large-format piece is a mixed file.
Re-set the type rather than tracing it
Traced type is the weakest part of any vectorized poster. At A5 nobody looks; at A1 the stems visibly wobble and the counters are subtly wrong, and type at that size is what the whole piece is judged on.
Identify the fonts and set the text live. This also gives you back the ability to fix the typo somebody will find, adjust the line breaks for the new proportions, and hyphenate properly at the new measure — none of which is possible with traced letterforms.
Work out the real scale factor first
A5 to A1 is four doublings of area and four times the linear dimension. Something designed to be read at arm's length is now read from three metres, which changes what the design should be doing — the hierarchy that worked in the hand is often too flat on a wall.
So while you are rebuilding it, check the hierarchy at the real viewing distance rather than just enlarging faithfully. Vectorizing gives you a piece that is sharp at any size; it does not give you a piece that is designed for any size.
Colour will need attention for print
The traced colours come from the raster, which was almost certainly RGB and possibly a screenshot. Large-format printing is usually CMYK, and the conversion will shift the vivid ones — saturated oranges, deep blues and anything approaching a fluorescent is going to move.
Set the key colours explicitly after converting rather than letting the RGB values ride through. If there is a brand palette, this is the moment to apply it properly; if not, at least check the saturated areas in a CMYK preview before the file goes out.

Common problems
- The vectorized photograph looks like a bad poster filter
- That is what vectorizing continuous tone does. Leave the photograph as high-resolution raster and place it into the vector document.
- The headline type looks subtly wrong at large size
- It was traced. Identify the typeface and set it live — at A1 the difference between a real curve and a traced one is exactly where the eye goes.
- Colours look flat and dull on the printed proof
- RGB values from the source went through an unmanaged CMYK conversion. Set the key colours explicitly and check a CMYK preview before sending.
- The background gradient came back as visible bands
- Gradients become bands of flat colour. Rebuild the gradient as a real gradient fill in your editor — the traced bands give you the colour stops to match.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I just enlarge the raster instead?
- Modern AI upscalers do a respectable job on photographs, and a poor one on flat graphics and type — the exact opposite of what a poster needs. Vectorize the flat elements and, if you must, upscale the photographs.
- What resolution does a large-format print actually need?
- Less than people assume, because viewing distance scales with size — 100 to 150 dpi at final size is normal for something read from a couple of metres. Vector elements are resolution-independent and sidestep the question entirely.
- Should I convert the whole flyer in one go?
- You can, and it is the fastest route to something that looks broadly right. But the type and any photographs will be the weak parts, so the better result comes from converting the flat graphics only and rebuilding the rest.
- Do print shops accept SVG?
- Increasingly yes, and where they do not, a PDF exported from your layout tool covers it — as does an EPS saved from the SVG, for the shops that ask for one specifically.
