How to Vectorize for Cricut, Silhouette and Vinyl Cutters

A cutting machine does not see your image. It follows paths — a sequence of coordinates the blade travels along — and everything that makes a cut file good or bad is a property of those paths rather than of how the artwork looks on screen.
That is why so much craft-forum advice is about file preparation rather than design. This guide covers what a vectorizer can do for you, and the three things you still have to check yourself before sending anything to a mat.
Closed contours are the whole requirement
A cut path must be a closed loop. If it has a gap — even a gap of a fraction of a millimetre, invisible at any zoom level you would normally look at — the machine either skips the cut entirely or cuts a line that never rejoins, and the piece tears when you weed it.
Tracing from a filled region produces closed contours by construction: the tracer is finding the boundary of an area, and the boundary of an area is necessarily a loop. Tracing from a drawn outline does not — a hand-drawn circle scanned from paper is a thick ring, and its trace is two loops, an outer and an inner. That is usually what you want for a cut, but you should know which one you have got.
Flat regions cut well; gradients and photographs do not
Vinyl comes in flat colours, and a cutting machine has one blade. So the artwork has to resolve into a small number of discrete regions, each of which becomes one piece of one colour of material. A design with four flat colours is four cut files and four sheets of vinyl. A design with a gradient is not a cut file at all.
Before converting, ask what each colour in the image is going to become physically. If the answer is unclear for any of them, simplify the artwork first. This is the step that saves material, and it is much cheaper to do on screen than after two feet of vinyl.
Watch the node count — it is blade travel
Every node is a point the blade decelerates towards and accelerates away from. A curve made of twelve points cuts smoothly; the same curve made of two hundred points cuts with a faint scalloping you can feel with a fingernail, and takes noticeably longer.
This is the one place where a low node count is not just tidiness. If the source image was noisy — a JPG, or a photograph of a drawing rather than a scan — the trace will carry that noise as extra nodes along every edge. Clean the source, or simplify the paths in Design Space or Studio before cutting.
Check the smallest feature against your blade
A cutter cannot cut a shape smaller than its blade can turn inside. In practice that means interior corners below roughly 2 mm come out rounded, and detached pieces below roughly 5 mm are very hard to weed even when they cut correctly. Serif type at small sizes is the usual casualty.
Look at the traced file at your intended physical size, not at screen size. A design that looks fine at 400% will lose its fine detail at 3 cm across, and the time to discover that is before the material is on the mat.

Simplify the artwork to flat colours
Decide what physical piece of material each colour will become. Remove gradients and photographic areas — a blade cannot cut them.

Convert to SVG
Upload the artwork and download the SVG. Both Cricut Design Space and Silhouette Studio import SVG directly.

Check every contour is closed
Open the file in Inkscape or your cutting software and look for open paths. A gap you cannot see is still a cut the machine will skip.

Scale to the real physical size
Set the design to the size it will actually cut at, then look at the smallest features. Anything under a couple of millimetres will not survive the blade.

Simplify if the node count is high
Fewer nodes means smoother, faster blade travel. Use your cutting software's simplify command if the traced paths came back dense.
Common problems
- Design Space says the file has no cuttable paths
- The SVG contains only strokes with no fill, or the paths are open. Give the shapes a fill, and close any open contours in Inkscape before re-importing.
- The blade cut a double line around everything
- You traced a drawn outline rather than a filled shape, so each stroke became two contours. Fill the shape in the source image before converting, or delete the inner contour afterwards.
- Small details tore while weeding
- They are below what the material and blade can hold. Scale the design up, thicken thin strokes, or remove the detail — it will not survive at that size whatever the file says.
- The cut edges feel scalloped rather than smooth
- Too many nodes. The source was probably a JPG or a photograph; convert from a clean scan or PNG, and simplify the paths before cutting.
Frequently asked questions
- Does Cricut Design Space accept SVG?
- Yes, on a paid Cricut Access plan and on the free plan alike — SVG upload is part of the basic Design Space feature set. Silhouette Studio imports SVG on the Designer Edition and above; the Basic Edition takes DXF instead, which you can export from Inkscape once you have the SVG.
- Can I vectorize a photo for cutting?
- You can convert it, but the result is not a cut file. A photograph has no flat regions, so the trace produces many overlapping shapes with no clear correspondence to pieces of material. Convert photographs to a deliberately posterised design first, or start from flat artwork.
- How many colours should a cut design have?
- As many as you are willing to buy sheets of vinyl for and weed by hand. Two or three is comfortable; six is a long evening. Each colour is a separate cut, a separate weed and a separate transfer.
- Is it free to convert a cut file?
- A free account converts 10 images a month at up to 2 megapixels, with no card. For occasional projects that is usually enough; the paid plans convert in the browser without a monthly ceiling.
