How to Vectorize Handwriting and Signatures

A signature is a natural fit for vector. It is a single flowing stroke that should look identical on a business card, an email footer and a shop sign, and it is exactly the kind of high-contrast mark a tracer handles well.
Archival handwriting is the harder cousin: faint iron-gall ink on aged paper, with foxing and show-through from the other side of the sheet. The technique is the same, the preparation is more work.
Sign on white with a dark pen and scan it
If you are producing a signature from scratch rather than rescuing one, control the source. Use a black fineliner or a fountain pen on plain white paper, sign several times, and scan the sheet at 600 dpi. Then pick the best one — you get several attempts for the cost of one scan, and the difference between your third signature and your first is usually visible.
A photograph of a signature works if you must, but the uneven lighting means the paper is a gradient rather than a flat white, and that gradient is the first thing that shows up as speckle in the trace.
Contrast, then crop to the ink
Raise the contrast until the paper is genuinely white and the stroke genuinely dark. A levels adjustment does this in one move: bring the white point down until the paper is clean, and the black point up until the stroke is solid.
Then crop tight to the signature itself. A generous margin of paper is a generous margin of scanner noise, and cropping it away removes an entire class of problem before it starts.
Smooth just enough to remove the scanner's tremor
Scanning samples your line on a fixed grid, and the traced boundary steps in and out by a fraction of a pixel all along it. A little smoothing removes that completely.
Past that point you are removing the signature rather than the noise. The tiny variations in pressure and direction are what make a signature look like a person signed it, and an over-smoothed one has the uncanny evenness of a font. On Pro and above the control is a four-step scale; Strong is the default and is usually right here.
Archival documents: expect to work on the raster
Old paper brings foxing (the brown spots), show-through from writing on the reverse, and ink that has faded unevenly across the page. All three trace as real features because in the image they are real features.
The productive order is: correct the overall tone with curves so the ink separates from the paper, paint out the foxing at low opacity with a white brush, and only then convert. If the reverse side shows through strongly, a scan with a sheet of black paper behind the page reduces it considerably — the black stops the scanner's light bouncing back through the sheet.

The traced stroke picks up whatever colour the ink scanned as. Set it to the value you want — usually pure black or the brand colour.
Common problems
- The signature is surrounded by tiny specks
- Paper texture or scanner noise. Raise the contrast so the paper is clean white, and crop tightly to the ink.
- Parts of the stroke broke into separate pieces
- The pen skipped, or the contrast adjustment cut through a light section. Ease off the black point, or repair the gap in the raster with a brush before converting.
- It looks too perfect and not like a real signature
- Smoothing is too high. On Pro and above, step it down — the small irregularities are the thing that makes it read as handwritten.
- Writing from the back of the page shows through
- Rescan with a sheet of black paper behind the page, which stops the light bouncing back through. Then raise the contrast to drop what remains.
Frequently asked questions
- Is a vectorized signature legally valid?
- That depends entirely on jurisdiction and context, and it is not a question about file formats. In many places a scanned or drawn signature is acceptable for routine documents and inadequate for others. Ask a lawyer, not a converter.
- What resolution should I scan a signature at?
- 600 dpi. A signature is small on the page, so a high scan resolution costs almost nothing and gives the tracer a clean, well-defined stroke to work with.
- Can I change the colour afterwards?
- Yes — that is one of the main reasons to have it as vector. The traced stroke is a shape with a fill, so setting it to black, to a brand colour, or to white for a dark background is a single click.
- Will old faded handwriting convert?
- It will, but the result is only as good as the separation you can achieve between ink and paper. Spend the time on curves and spot-cleaning in the raster; that work matters far more here than anything in the conversion itself.
